Selecting an Electrician or Plumber

It’s important when selecting an electrician or plumber that you do your homework before you have a problem. That way you are prepared when the unexpected happens!

Here are some things you should consider:

  • Always select a reputable company. It’s important to know whom you are dealing with. Be sure and look for a company that has been in business for a minimum of several years and ask them to supply references from customers who have contracted for similar projects.
  • Do the State of Maryland and the county within which you reside license the company? If so, is the company familiar with local codes and permit requirements?
  • Does the company provide 24-hour emergency service?
  • Is the company equipped to handle any size and type of job?
  • Do they have a complete customer satisfaction guarantee? Be sure to get it in writing!
  • Does the company have service contracts available to cover electrical and plumbing system components?

At BGE HOME, we can answer, "yes" to all of these questions. We’ve been providing quality electrical and plumbing services for years. Safety and Do-It-Yourself Tips

Safety should be a priority on any job. Here are some helpful hints to keep you safe!

  • Never work on any live circuit, fixture, switch or receptacle. Be sure to shut off power before performing any electrical repair.
  • Check outlets and extension cords to make sure they aren’t overloaded. Check that extension cords aren’t frayed, damaged or placed under carpets or rugs.
  • Use the proper wattage light bulbs as recommended on the UL® tag in light fixtures and lamps.
  • Consider installing Ground Fault Interrupters (GFIs). They can protect you from serious injury due to electric shock. They constantly monitor electricity flow into a circuit and can detect even slight variations. They quickly shut off current flowing to a circuit when variations occur.
  • If your electrical system is old, consider having an electrical system inspection to determine the safety and efficiency of your system.
  • Extension cords should never be used as a substitute for permanent wiring.
  • Install low energy nightlights in hallways, bathrooms and kitchens to guide family members and guests at night.
  • Always know where your water supply shutoffs are located. This includes the main water shut off, toilet shut off and sink shut off valves.

Save yourself time and money with these electrical and plumbing do-it-yourself and troubleshooting hints.

  • If your circuit breaker trips or fuses blow there may be a short circuit, an overloaded circuit or a weak breaker. A certified electrician will need to handle this for you.
  • If a light fixture isn’t working check the bulb. Or it might be a faulty switch, loose wiring or a faulty socket.
  • If an appliance won’t work check for an overloaded circuit, damaged cord or plug or loose wiring.
  • When a fuse blows, always replace it with one of the same type and amp rating. Be sure to shut off all power before touching the fuse.
  • When a GFI receptacle won’t work, press the reset button and you should be back in business.
  • If your light bulbs are burning out too quickly, the wattage of the bulb may be too high.
  • If you have light bulbs that hum it may have a bad ballast or transformer that needs to be replaced. It could also be a conflict between the low voltage dimmer and the low voltage light controls.
  • When a toilet runs there are several things to check for: float arm not rising high enough, water-filled float ball, tank stopper not seated properly, corroded flush valve seal, cracked overflow tube, ball cock valve doesn’t shut off. Bend the float arm down or away from tank wall, replace ball or tube and install new flush valve assembly, adjust stopper guide rod and lift wires or chain, replace defective stopper, scour valve seat or replace, oil trip lever, replace faulty washers or install new ball cock assembly.
  • If your toilet is clogged, remove blockage with a plunger or closet auger.
  • Most drain problems can be avoided with regular maintenance. Run hot water down your drains every few weeks to remove accumulated soap and grease.
  • To keep your laundry tub from having drain blockages, tie an old stocking over the end of the drain hose to catch lint.
  • Here is a simple test to see if your toilet is leaking. Put food coloring in the toilet tank. If the water in the toilet bowl turns the color of the dye without flushing, you have a leak.
  • Poor water pressure at your kitchen or bathroom faucet could be an accumulation of sediment particles in the aerator. Remove the aerator, check for any blockages and run under water to clean.
  • Run ice cubes through your garbage disposal once a month to help keep unpleasant odors from building up.
  • Clean floor drain strainers regularly.
  • Clean pop up stoppers in the bathroom sink and tub regularly. Pull them out and rinse them off.
  • Weak pressure in your showerhead can be as simple as mineral buildup. Clean outlet holes with a pin or soak the faceplate in vinegar to remove deposits.
  • The most effective way to clear a clog is with a drain snake.
