BGE HOME is committed to the communities we serve. Throughout the year, we are proud to partner with local organizations and take part in activities to improve the lives of our customers and their families. Last month, over the course of two days, 600 BGE HOME employees built 72 bikes to be donated to local Baltimore youth through a partnership with the YMCA of Central Maryland and the Leader’s Institute.
During the two days, BGE HOME employees broke up into smaller groups to assemble the red and blue bikes. Each group was provided tools, parts and instructions to assemble a bike and was tasked with working together to assemble the bike. After the bikes were assembled, they were checked for safety and quality to make sure they were safe for the recipients.
The 72 bikes will be donated to the YMCA’s outdoor and bike safety programs in Baltimore’s Druid Hill neighborhood in West Baltimore, where many children live in families with incomes below the poverty line. In an interview with WMAR-TV, Jayson Green, the Executive Director of YMCA Druid Hill, explained how many of the children who will be receiving the bikes would not have had the opportunity to have a bike or even learn how to ride a bike if it weren’t for donations like the one BGE HOME made. He said, “This is an opportunity [for the kids] to have a brand-new bike put together safely, that’s well-constructed by people who care and really want to give back to the community.”
While building bikes from scratch had its challenges, the BGE HOME volunteers were glad to be able to provide the neighborhood children with recreation and learning experiences they might not have otherwise had. BGE HOME employees also enjoyed working with their colleagues to brighten the lives of community youth.
Jeff Mayne, a General Manager at BGE HOME explained, “I enjoyed that we got to work together as a team to help accomplish a goal. And not only that, it felt great to give back to the community.”
Karen Casey, a senior accountant for BGE HOME felt it was another opportunity to give back saying, “I thought it was a great exercise. It makes you feel good to help the community. Every single day BGE HOME and its employees are giving back to our community and this is just another way we’re doing it.”
