Our Gift of Warmth program is one of our favorite yearly traditions here at BGE HOME. Working with the United Way of Central Maryland and United Way of Frederick County, the Gift of Warmth provides nominated families throughout Maryland with new heating systems.
BGE HOME and United Way have teamed up to install new heating systems for 16 families since the program’s inception in 2015. In that time, BGE HOME technicians have also provided heating repairs to a total of 70 households through the United Way’s 2-1-1 help line.
“We’re grateful to be teaming with United Way for the fifth consecutive year to help deserving members of our community secure reliable heating through the holidays and beyond,” said Tamla Olivier, president & CEO of BGE HOME. “Programs like these are ingrained in who we are at BGE HOME. Our technicians jump at the opportunity to provide service and install the new systems that help provide a warm home for the recipients.”
On December 13, 2019, BGE HOME and United Way of Central Maryland installed a new heating system for the Edema family. Mrs. Edema and her four grandchildren were left without heat after their previous system failed them. Without being able to replace the system, the Edemas were forced to use space heaters to stay warm throughout the winter, which can be dangerous and inefficient.
The day of the installation, the Edema family was surprised by Baltimore Raven’s Pro Bowl linebacker, Matthew Judon, and Raven’s mascot Poe. Judon and Poe spent the day hanging out with Mrs. Edema and her family, tossing around a football with the kids and giving them early Christmas presents while their new heating system was installed.
Mrs. Edema was excited and surprised when she found out she had been chosen for a heating system replacement. “When we were selected, I was just in disbelief. Oh my god. I was just so ecstatic, so happy. It was an amazing feeling to know that we were going to just be warm,” she said.
Gift of Warmth also gives us an opportunity to partner with United Way of Central Maryland, one of the leading organizations working to improve the lives of people throughout greater Baltimore. “A Gift of Warmth demonstrates a core value shared by both United Way and BGE HOME. We’re committed to improving lives and communities,” said Franklyn Baker, president and CEO of United Way of Central Maryland. “We’re excited to team up with BGE HOME again this year to help families in need stay safe and warm through the winter months.”
The heating systems were donated by Trane and Carrier and installed by certified BGE HOME technicians.
