If the AC troubleshooting tips below don’t fix the issue, contact the air conditioning repair specialists at BGE HOME. We’ve worked with all types of central air conditioning systems, and we’re confident we can help.

Problem: The AC Compressor Doesn’t Turn On

AC Compressor Troubleshooting Tips

If your air conditioning’s compressor isn’t turning on, your home won’t be getting the cool air it needs to maintain a comfortable temperature. The compressor’s main job is to compress the cool, low-pressure refrigerant that is necessary for heat exchange. This part of your AC unit undergoes a lot of stress (especially during the Maryland summers), and it’s normal for it to wear down over time.

Check the power of your AC compressor

While this may seem like an obvious air conditioning troubleshooting tip, the first thing you’ll want to check is that your AC compressor is turned on. Is your AC compressor receiving the power it needs to function properly? Check all power connections and make sure a fuse hasn’t been blown or a circuit hasn’t been tripped before moving on to the next AC compressor troubleshooting tip.

Examine the coils of your AC system

Just like any major appliance in your home, your HVAC system can collect grime and dust. If your AC compressor isn’t turning on, it may be due to a buildup of unwanted contaminants on the condenser coil, as this can cause your compressor to overheat. Examine the coils of your air conditioner compressor. If you see a buildup of dust, dirt, and grime, contact a local AC repairman to come and inspect your air conditioner.

Problem: The AC System Isn’t Pushing Out Cool Air

Air Conditioner Troubleshooting Tips

When your central air conditioning system stops releasing cool air, there are a few things you can look at before calling your local AC technician.

Check the air filters

Did you know that a dirty air filter can prevent your central air conditioning system from functioning efficiently? If you avoid regular air filter replacement, things like pet dander, dirt and allergens can build up in your filters, restricting the airflow inside your home. The frequency at which you should change your air filters will depend on a few different factors, such as the size of your home. If you’re not sure how often you should be changing your home’s air filters, reach out to BGE HOME today.

Inspect the air conditioner for leaks

If your air conditioning system isn’t pushing out cool air, it may be due to a refrigerant leak (or low refrigerant in general). There are a few telltale signs that you have a refrigerant leak, including:

  • Ice buildup on the refrigerant line
  • Ice buildup on the outside AC unit
  • A strange hissing sound coming from the system

If you’ve noticed any of the signs listed above, contact an air conditioning repair specialist at BGE HOME. Our AC technicians are trained to handle refrigerant leaks, and we’ll do everything we can to fix the problem so you can get back to a cool and comfortable home.

Problem: The Air Conditioner Runs Continuously

AC Troubleshooting Tips

If your air conditioner won’t shut off, inspect the area around your thermostat before calling a technician. Move any heat-generating devices away from your thermostat; they may cause your system to cool unnecessarily.

If you have any questions about the air conditioning troubleshooting tips above, or you’re interested in scheduling an AC repair or AC tune-up with one of our Maryland AC technicians, contact BGE HOME today.
